Safe operation of any machine is important.  We all know that any improperly operated machine, even a small lawn mower, can be dangerous to property and people. Wise machine owners avoid injury to themselves and others by following safe operating procedures. These same machine owners also make sure that safe operating procedures are practiced by anyone who operates their machine. This involves a small investment in time and resources that pays big dividends by eliminating injury and accident. If it makes sense to invest time and money on training on a small machine of moderate value how much should we be willing to spend on operator training for a machine that costs $500,000.00?

For example, a 200 ton wheeled front-end loader is expensive and powerful. Would it not be wise to make sure that the heavy equipment operator responsible for such a machine be also equipped with applicable heavy equipment operator training? The truth is that many heavy equipment operators are given the responsibility for machines while they are lacking the necessary heavy equipment safety training. In many jurisdictions the heavyequipment operator trade is considered a non-copulsory & non-apprenticeable trade.

Those firms and individuals, who use heavy equipment in their operations, can save dollars and lives by providing heavy equipment safety training for all heavy equipment operators in their employ. Costly machine breakdowns, property damage and personal injury, often caused by untrained heavy equipment operators, could be avoided by providing heavy equipment safety training. Improper operation of heavy equipment can cause unnecessary equipment breakdown leading to costly loss in production.

It doesn’t make sense to invest a large sum of money in heavy equipment and then have this equipment operated by individuals who have no heavy equipment safety training.  It not only doesn’t make sense but it is irresponsible. How much equipment and property damage needs to occur before proper heavy equipment safety training is justified. It seems that sometimes corporations prefer to pay costly equipment and property repairs rather than invest in heavy equipment operator training.

It is interesting that corporations that have stellar safety records and profitable operation results usually have taken measures to ensure that all pertinent staff have received the appropriate heavy equipment safety training. Heavy equipment safety training involves a wise investment that successful and progressive corporations are quick to make. Lives can be saved and profits can be improved when heavy equipment operators have been equipped to function safely and efficiently.

Heavy equipment safety training may be a discretionary expense, in management’s mind, but experience has shown that failure to invest in training often leads to unnecessary expenditures, due to machine breakdown, and poor operations which can lead to injury and death to personnel.
